Guardsman Mohawk LeatherCare Metroguardian Knowledge Choosing the Right Products Matter Caring for Wood Furniture Caring for furniture is easy. Follow a few simple guidelines will help extend the life of your furniture. Always dust with a polish moistened cloth. Polish cushions the cloth, eliminating the scratching that occurs with dry dusting dust will scratch the furniture surface if not removed properly. Use a soft, clean cloth that won’t scratch the surface. Avoid coarse or scratchy materials or fabrics. Never use soap and water on furniture. Water can penetrate the finish and raise the grain on wood, causing damage. A quality polish enhances the natural beauty of wood by complementing the luster and enriching the grain. It protects the finish because it serves as a temporary barrier to spilled liquids. The cleaning ingredients in polish effectively remove smudges, dust and soil when properly applied. Tips for Better Dusting: Be sure to use the same type of polish consistently. Your furniture will appear cloudy or streaky if oil-based and wax-based polishes are interchanged. Always use a fine furniture polish when dusting. Never dry dust, as it could case microscopic scratches on your furniture surface. Remember to change dusting cloths frequently since a dirty cloth may scratch your furniture surface. Spray your furniture surface evenly, but not too generously. Wipe in a circular motion with a soft, clean cloth to clean and loosen the old polish. Then, buff until completely dry for a beautiful shine and a smudge-resistant finish. For wood trim, spray polish on the cloth first, then dust. Office Furniture Repair, Refinishing, and Reupholstering all require Experience and skill However, they are not always the most economical way to replace old or broken furniture. Because wood is a natural product, and it may not always be possible to know how furniture has been treated results may not turn out exactly as a consumer hopes. As a reputable professional we can help consumers decide if a piece of furniture warrants the investment of professional repair, touchup or refinishing services. We have listed a link for a few furniture care tips to help maintain the beauty. Traditional Furniture Refinishing Refinishing furniture generally starts with performing any necessary repairs, such as re-gluing loose parts or peeling veneer, replacing broken or cracked pieces, etc. Then the piece is stripped of old paint, stain, varnish and or other finishes. It may be bleached to lighten the wood or remove stains, after which the furniture is carefully sanded, often several times. Then stain is applied and finished with varnish or some other protective clear coat, (semi, satin, gloss) finish. Refinishing Furniture vs. Furniture Refurbishing Often furniture does not need to be completely stripped and refinished and will benefit from less aggressive care called "refurbishing." The first step is to thoroughly clean it to remove built-up dirt and wax. If most of the original finish is still intact, it may just need a little light sanding and touch-up staining to match the original finish, with a final coat of varnish or other protective finish. This is far less time consuming and costly than complete refinishing.
Antique Furniture Refinishing Refinishing antique furniture can restore its beauty, but it can be difficult for many people to tell how much restoration is too much. Obviously, pieces that you plan to keep for yourself can be refinished, refurbished, or whatever you like to whatever degree you desire. For collectors and antique dealers, however, there is such a thing as too much restoration. Incredible things can be done with pieces that you might think can't be salvaged, but in some cases, leaving an antique in its current condition may be your best course of action. It is a good idea to have a professional appraiser take a look at any piece of antique furniture you're planning on selling for a profit before touching it. | |
